Vrindavan - Shadow / Light

Shadow / Light

Vrindvan is city in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh in India. The river Yamuna flows through the outskirts of the city.

Vrindavan is a center of Krishna worship and is a sacred place for the Vaisnavism tradition of Hinduism. The town hosts a large number of temples dedicated to the worship of Radha and Krishna. It is said that Lord Krishna spent most of his childhood days here.

Vrindavan is also known as the "City of Widows". This is due to the large number of widows who move into the town and surrounding area after losing their husbands.

Many spend time singing bhajan hymns at the many bhajanashrams in the city (a bhajan hymn is a devotional hymn, or collection of hymns, usually sung collectively). Doing this they can earn a few rupees and are given a handful of rice. The ashrams also provide some very basic accommodation. Most of the widows live in really poor conditions.
